I've been lurking on LiveJournal lately.
I'm thinking about dumping this friendster crap and converting.
Last night after hitting paydirt in my great aunts closet while hunting for costumes for Machinal... I took a break from repairing a costumre piece to finish the Momstole! Now, only two more sweaters to go, and Christmas06 is finished (bouwahahaha).
I would show you a picture, but Joe took the camera to DC with him, so you will just have to imagine 7 feet of soft lavender lace that wraps gently around bare shoulders.
It's pretty.
It's been a rigorous uphill climb, and me not being particuarly athletic, I've balked at most of the effort. But it's looking like we have a place to live in DC! Joe promises to send pictures soon.
Pluses - it's 2 blocks from ACA, 3 blocks from a tube stop. It's just about big enough. It's in a neighborhood that's similar to uptown, with a YARN STORE AROUND THE CORNER *sighs quietly with pleasure*.
Minus - the rent is mucho $$. About twice what we are paying now.
But a home is a home is a home, right? Some of you may remember Joe's experience with the "Twilight of the Golds" set not getting finished until the Wednesday AFTER opening.
That might just happen with Beauty and the Beast.
Not helping matters is the fact that the TD is yelling at everyone all the time. He actually yelled at me at one point. I was so taken aback I just stood their and stared at him. I have NEVER had a designer yell at me.
I was busy working with the actors during fight call and he came in wanting to fly a drop out, I said, ah, we're still doing fight call, can you wait? and he yells "Fine! I was told to fix this, but whatever!" I couldn't even come up with something constructive to say, it was pretty bizarre.
At any rate, I'm trying really hard to be the one person who is keeping their cool, since everyone else on the design/tech/production staff seems to be losing it left and right. Joe gave me good advice= just come out of it smelling like a rose. Make sure everyone likes you at the end.
I think that will be the case... and I don't think I will do summer stock again unless the production team is adequately staffed. And staffed with employees who are NOT the actors on stage.
I'm officially homeless.
Joe is on his way to DC (somewhere in Pennsylvania as we speak) and I'm plowing through tech week for Beauty and the Beast in River Falls, WI. The show will be fine... nothing spectacular, but pretty decent summerstock/community theater.
I'm staying at a cast member's parent's house. It's quite lovely, all japanese and Frank Loyd Wright inspired architecture. A little chilly though - not used to the central air.
I'm wrapping up a ton of loose ends from the move, but hopefully all of that will be finished by this afternoon. All that crap like changing our insurance and making sure the cable box gets back to the lovely folks at Time Warner and whatnot. I'm really sick of explaining the situation, though.
At any rate, my nights are filled with B&B, but I don't need to do any prep work, just show up. So I'm spending my days working on Machinal and getting that all ready for rehearsals, which start on Saturday.
Oh, did I mention that I've got auditions for the christmas show on Sunday? Yeah. I better start choosing some sides.
I've been a little preoccupied and consequently a little quiet lately, what with going into tech week with Beauty and the Beast and beginning rehearsals for Machinal the day after B&B opens and that's not even counting the fact that Joe is moving to DC with our apartment and the cats on Monday. Yes, Monday, the second day of tech (I know, I'm a little insane right now).
We just got a big carrier so the cats could travel together (of course he'll be bringing a second carrier in case they get crabby). We also got a couple of "barrel" collars, just in case they get lost somewhere in Ohio. They look adorable in their new collars...
Sal models a lovely shade of green that compliments his eyes and coat....
And Wilson sports a funkier look with a jet black collar. He's metrosexual enough to be able to pull of the pink accessories.
The next time you hear from me, I'll be officially couch surfing my way through the rest of the summer!
Success! Sarah is now minus one dress, but in possession of one superawesome bag.
Here's the continuing saga...
Much pondering over where to place pockets. Pockets on pockets? It can't be! It's too much pockety goodness!!
Ooo, check out that lining. And that oh so artistic actiong shot of Sarah... is she diving into it she's so excited?
Sometimes sewing can be a little tedious... especially when you are doing boring old straps.
But we all know how important straps are!!
Action shot of Sarah inverting the bag...
Look! All the inside bits ended up on the inside and the outside bits ended up on the outside!
Sarah models the bag. I think it's kinda funny how you can open the bag, coax it oh so gently, and the satin trembles a little to reveal folds of silky pink lining.
Did you not get my illusion? Well, here's a better example...
Of course, details are important...
And a final action shot of Sarah and her fabulous bag!!!
We are very proud.
We cancelled our Cingular service a couple of months ago when we got fancy new phones with a fancy new nationwide service (prepping for the move to DC and all).
When we cancelled, I called and said, "well, why should I pay for an entire month when I'm only using 20 days?" The gentleman I spoke with was very accomidating, although he did admit that they usually don't do prorate the final month unless people ask them to. SCAM ARTISTS!!
At any rate, he and I figured out how much the final bill should be, and I paid the difference.
A few weeks ago I got a bill for 66 cents. I figured that we hadn't done the math quite right. But since I had closed the account already, I couldn't settle it online, I needed to call.
Off I go to the phone. When I reach a new lovely gentleman at Cingular he informs me that I actually have a CREDIT of 66 cents. I say, "It will probably cost you more to mail it to me than the check itself..." he replies in a stick-it-to-the-man tone of voice, "I know it will, but I would be HAPPY to mail you a check for 66 cents!" I respond, "well, I'll try not to spend it all in one place! Yee ha. What will I do with it?" He says I might be able to retire.
I love the customer service guys at Cingular. I don't like their policies of not prorating unless you ask for it, but I do like the guys on the phone.
I've been fairly quiet on the whole "will Carin do any directing in DC?" subject because.. well, you know... you don't want to let everyone know about things that are only maybes.
The update is that out of the 200 or so theaters that I mailed letters to in the spring, about 35 have responded back with varying forms of "thanks, and your resume is impressive, but we've filled our directing slots for 06/07, please keep us updated so we can keep you on file for the future." So basically I've added them to my mailing list.
But there were a couple of actual nibbles, two companies in New York that are currently considering me for AD positions and two in DC that had contacted me about directing. Now it looks like one of those DC theaters will be using me in the spring - which makes Carin exhale a little bit...
Also (and this is the really cool part of the story) I need to change my travel plans slightly. I was originally going to leave the Cities on Sept 11 and take two days to drive to DC. Now, I need to leave on the 12th, so that when I am driving through Chicago I can interview with David New at STEPPENWOLF. Fuck yeah.
Of course, I don't think that I will be getting a job out of this, it's more a "hi, nice to meet you, now you know that I exist" sort of thing... but still... I'm a little giddy.
